The drive itself, with a length of less than 450 km in the off-season, takes about 4 hours. During the summer season, when a huge number of vehicles enter our roads, either because of road works or because of the sometimes incredible crowds at the Gradina border crossing, this journey can take several hours longer.
Considering that all our vehicles have tag devices for toll collection, there is no waiting at the toll stations during weekends and holidays as well as in the season. Still, a break is desirable, and the town of Nis, which is roughly halfway there, is the perfect place to take a break. A city of delicious food and real hosts – say the guests of this city.
On way to Bulgaria
The most attractive part of this trip starts after the lunch break (at the request of the passengers) from Niš to Sofia. The ascent begins towards Suva mountain, Ploče, where after passing through the Bancarevo tunnel, a wonderful view of the peaks of Suva mountain – Sokolov kamen and Trem can be seen.
It takes about an hour to drive to the border with Bulgaria. In front of the border there is an OMV pump, an ideal place for a short break, a possible trip to the toilet. During the summer season, the crowds at this border crossing can be catastrophic, as long as you drive with us, the wait cannot be longer than two hours.
In Bulgaria
After crossing the border, the section of the highway ends because the road from Kalotina to Sofia is under construction, where you alternate between the old and the new road. Sofia is another hour’s drive away.
